It’s rare for me to go a day without coffee. I don’t get raging headaches or turn into a raving maniac without one, but I am firmly in the camp of believers that a day starts better with coffee. For me that requirement is often met at a café – its one of the reasons that I live in the inner city, spoilt for choice and all that. However, there are days when venturing outside is the last thing you want to do, or you’ve got people over for dinner and it would be nice to finish with an espresso. So when I was invited by Undertow Media to participate in a Lavazza A Modo Mio workshop at the recent Melbourne International Coffee Expo, and take one of their clever little machines home – I eagerly accepted.
To be honest I was initially a little sceptical about how good a capsule coffee would be, but I was there to learn, and learn I did. I was happily surprised to find out that the machine has 9 bars of pressure (which is pretty much the standard in most modern commercial machines if you take pre-infusion out of the equation). What this meant was the extraction was great, giving the coffee great crema and balanced flavour. Speaking of flavour – you are well covered there with eight different blends to choose from. My favourite at present is ¡Tierra! Intenso It is a dark roasted 100% Arabica blend that is full bodied with hints of chocolate. It is sourced only from sustainable coffee farms and an example of Lavazza’s commitment to corporate responsibility and Giuseppe Lavazza’s belief that “coffee farming should help, not hurt the environment and lifestyles of rural communities”.
To complement the capsules, the ¡Tierra! Intenso blend will soon be available in beans and ground retail packs.
A Modo Mio means “my way” – an apt choice for a coffee machine since in my experience each of us has a particular way we like to enjoy our coffee. Easy to use and equally easy to clean, this is a great little machine and a happy addition to my kitchen bench.
When thinking about which way I like my coffee, I came across this fun little infographic on TimeOut Melbourne so I thought I’d share it, and ask the question, how do you like your coffee?
You are the 99%. Add two sugars if you wear a hard hat. Make it skinny if you wear a suit.
You’re so postmodern you wear a bowler hat and Nike Back to the Future sneakers. Either that, or you are WAY behind the times.
You’re pretty steady-as-she-blows cool. You don’t rock any boats. You have written at least one haiku in your life.
You are a boss. You probably ride to work on a tiger. Nobody knows your middle name.
You’re a walking brand ambassador – except nobody is sponsoring you.
Check the mirror. Are you experiencing the early stages of puberty? If so, carry on. If not, you might want to ditch the choccy milk.
Are you hitting up the gay marriage/wind farm rally before or after yoga-lates?
