2016 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards

Western Australia’s Limeburners Distillery has been announced as Australian Distiller of the Year, taking home a total of three trophies including the title of Champion Whisky for the second year running and Champion Small Batch Spirit at the 2016 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards (ADSA).

Conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), the organisation responsible for the Australian International Beer Awards and the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards, the ADSA Presentation was held last night at The Craft & Co, Collingwood, with eight Champion Trophies presented.

A new addition to the awards in 2016, the Champion Small Batch Spirit Trophy acknowledges specialty small-scale production spirits and liqueurs made in limited quantities that are distinct from a distiller’s standard range. The inaugural Champion Small Batch Spirit Trophy was presented to Limeburners Distillery for their Single Malt Whisky Heavy Peat M226, which was also awarded Champion Whisky.

Limeburners has been distilling whisky for 10 years from its boutique distillery in Albany, and now also in Margaret River, Western Australia. Limeburners has established a solid reputation for producing sublime, world-class whiskies and spirits. The Distillery strives to source local ingredients and is sustainably powered by the Albany wind farm.

Other trophy winners included Old Young’s Pure No. 1, Champion Vodka; Hoochery Distillery’s Ord River Rum – Premium, Champion Rum; Kangaroo Island Spirits’ kis Old Tom, Champion Gin; St Agnes XO, Champion Brandy and Castle Glen Australia’s Golden Knight Schnapps Liqueur, Champion Liqueur.

“We congratulate all the trophy winners from the 2016 ADSA on their remarkable success. Australian distillers have a rapidly growing global reputation for producing outstanding spirits and liqueurs,” said Mark O’Sullivan, CEO, RASV.

“We are committed to showcasing excellence and celebrating quality in distilling in this country and will continue to evolve the awards to reflect this exciting and burgeoning industry.”

The 2016 ADSA attracted 154 entries from 42 exhibitors, representing more than 80% of Australian distillers.

An impressive panel of industry experts, led by Head Judge Jason Crawley of The Drink Cabinet, assessed the beverages over two days of judging, from the 12-13 April at Melbourne Showgrounds. “The overall quality of the Australian spirits and liqueurs exhibited was astonishing,” said Mr Crawley. “Our overall feeling was that there has been a remarkable shift towards world-class production in all categories and classes.”

A total of 80 medals were awarded this year including 14 gold, 23 silver and 43 bronze.

Following on from last night’s highly anticipated announcements, the first ever exclusive ADSA Exhibitor and Trade Tasting will be held at The Craft & Co today from 11am-2pm allowing exhibitors, retailers and distributors to have the chance to taste and trial all spirits and liqueurs entered into the awards.

Last night’s event was part of the ‘Winning Tastes’ schedule of annual events, which includes a showcase of fine food and drink at the Royal Melbourne Show.
