Fruit mince pies

Have you seen them?  The decorations, cards and merchandise that crept into stores in some cases as early as the beginning of October to herald the coming of Christmas.  For me, as always, I link such times to food, so it was the arrival of a beautiful box of fruit mince pies from La Madre that told me that yuletide season was upon us.

The ingredients of this seasonal treat are traceable to the 13th century, when European crusaders returned bringing Middle Eastern recipes and methods of cooking which combined meat with fruit and spices.  Today the meat has been dropped from the pie, but the wonderful spices remain.

Moist and moreish the mince pies from La Madre are laced with cinnamon and perfect with an afternoon cuppa, or that’s what my Dad thinks!  Made from organic unbleached wheat flour, fruit mince (apple, sultanas, currants, citrus peel, sugar, glucose syrup), butter, icing sugar, to me they look and smell like Christmas.
